The United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) has today published its annual Earnings to Reinvest report, highlighting significant progress in environmental restoration and nuclear facility clean-up operations during the 2023/24 financial year.
The report showcases how UKNNL’s reinvestment of earnings has advanced scientific and technological capabilities in nuclear decommissioning, through collaborative partnerships with key organisations including Sellafield Ltd, and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
James Murphy, Chief Customer Officer, UKNNL, said:
“This report demonstrates our ongoing commitment to creating a cleaner, safer environment for future generations. Through trusted partnerships and collaborative innovation, we continue to harness nuclear science to benefit society while supporting the environmental restoration of the UK’s nuclear sites.”
Key achievements detailed in the report include:
- Progress in core scientific research and technology development
- Expansion of international and academic partnerships
- Advancements in site clean-up technologies
- Development of technical skills and capabilities
The report particularly highlights the successful ongoing collaboration with Sellafield Ltd together with the developing relationship with the NDA and its other operating companies, focused on developing technologies to aid the clean-up of the Sellafield site and supporting the broader NDA estate. It also details how initial investments in core science have evolved into broader work programmes delivering practical environmental benefits.
UKNNL recently showcased these achievements at the NDA Supply Chain Event in Telford, where the organisation’s interactive display in the Innovation Zone demonstrated practical applications of its environmental restoration work.
Wayne Muckley, VP for Legacy Sites, said:
“The event provided an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how our research and innovation directly support decommissioning programmes across the UK.”
