UKNNL celebrates excellence in health and safety with esteemed industry recognition

United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) has been recognised for its outstanding commitment to workplace health and safety with a prestigious Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Award in the Research & Development category. This latest honour follows last year’s Order of Distinction, which was achieved following 21 consecutive years of Gold Awards.

The accolade demonstrates UKNNL’s unwavering dedication to maintaining the highest standards of safety for staff, customers and visitors across its facilities. UKNNL was assessed against rigorous criteria, establishing the organisation as a world leader in shaping safer, healthier workplaces.

UKNNL has distinguished itself by cultivating a strong safety culture throughout the entire organisation. This culture is characterised by a proactive approach to risk management, where employees at every level are encouraged to identify potential hazards and contribute to safety improvements.

Garry Bellard, EHS&Q Manager at UKNNL, said:

This award reflects the extraordinary commitment of every member of our organisation in creating a robust safety culture. At UKNNL, safety isn’t just a priority – it’s a core value embedded in everything we do. This recognition validates our approach to continuous improvement and demonstrates that our safety systems meet the highest industry standards.”

Julia Small, RoSPA’s Growth Director, praised UKNNL’s achievement:

“UKNNL should be proud of the hard work and commitment to keeping people safe that has resulted in a RoSPA Award, which honours those organisations who have achieved the highest standards in health and safety in the workplace.

“RoSPA regards UKNNL as a strong example of the importance of making accident prevention central to any successful organisation, not just for the benefit of employees, customers and clients, but also society as a whole.”

Now in its 69th year, the RoSPA Awards programme receives almost 2,000 entries annually from over 50 countries, covering over seven million employees, making it the world’s largest health and safety awards programme. The prestigious awards are sponsored by the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH).

Dee Arp, NEBOSH Chief Quality Officer and the Head Judge of the RoSPA Awards, said:

“NEBOSH is delighted to be the headline sponsor of the RoSPA Awards. Recognising excellence in health and safety is essential to ensure we celebrate achievement, but it is also about reinforcing a culture of care, accountability and continuous improvement.

“These awards serve as a powerful reminder that employee safety and wellbeing transcends borders and looking after our people, so they can go home safe, healthy and happy every day, also drives sustainable success and resilience.”

The RoSPA Awards scheme is the longest-running of its kind in the UK and one of the most sought-after achievement awards for the health and safety industry globally.
