UKNNL’s Robert Alford Recognised as Most Outstanding Nuclear Advocate

Robert Alford, UKNNL Senior Research Technologist and Nuclear Institute Fellow, has been honoured with the Most Outstanding Advocate award at the Nuclear Institute Awards, recognising his decade-long commitment to inspiring others about nuclear energy’s vital role in our clean energy future.

The prestigious award celebrates Nuclear Institute volunteers who demonstrate outstanding activity to positively influence the nuclear sector, fellow members, and public opinion—qualities that Robert exhibits in abundance through his tireless advocacy work.

A passion for nuclear education
As the youngest person ever to achieve Nuclear Institute Fellowshiop, Robert’s dedication to advocacy is remarkable.  His advocacy spans an impressive range of activities. As a core committee member of the Nuclear Institute Cumbria branch for over ten years, he has organised countless events and led educational training initiatives, including arranging the annual Cumbria heat of the Young Speaking Competition.

But it’s his broader community engagement that truly sets Robert apart. From inspiring primary school children with hands-on science demonstrations to speaking at events about nuclear’s role in decarbonisation, Robert brings infectious enthusiasm to every interaction, translating scientific expertise into inspiration for the next generation.

“Being an ambassador for our sector is a great hobby of mine,” Robert reflected on receiving the award. “I aim to continue my passion for enthusing and educating people of all ages about nuclear and specifically unlocking the role of nuclear in decarbonisation beyond electricity.”

Making nuclear accessible to all
Robert’s approach centres on what he calls “embrace, engage, enable”—helping people at all levels understand and feel confident discussing nuclear energy. Whether he’s presenting to industry professionals or demonstrating magnetism with “magic” to schoolchildren, his goal remains the same: building understanding and enthusiasm for nuclear’s potential.

His presentations consistently receive glowing feedback, with attendees noting how Robert helps them feel more comfortable and confident talking about nuclear with friends and family—exactly the ripple effect he aims to create.

Supporting UKNNL’s mission
Robert’s advocacy work directly supports UKNNL’s mission to champion and nurture advanced nuclear skills. Through every classroom visit, conference presentation, and community engagement, he builds understanding and enthusiasm that extends far beyond any single event.

This recognition reinforces how individual passion and commitment can amplify collective impact. Robert’s work supports our objective to enable and deliver nuclear outcomes for government and support growth of the UK nuclear sector—one conversation, one presentation, one inspired young person at a time.
