UKNNL Chair Ian Funnell to Step Down

Ian Funnell, Chair of United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) since January 2022, will step down at the end of December 2025.

Mr Funnell made this personal decision at a time he views as a natural transition point for new Board leadership as UKNNL enters the next phase of development.

DESNZ will appoint an interim Chair, with effect from January 2026, to ensure ongoing Board leadership, whilst a permanent successor is recruited through the standard public appointments process.

Ian Funnell said:

“It has been an honour to have served as the Chair of United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) over the last four years. The Laboratory is a world class facility and is recognised by government as playing a critical role in this new ‘golden age’ of the UK nuclear sector.

“Last year, the Laboratory underwent a Strategic Review and since then, I have been focused on getting UKNNL ready to rise to its new challenges, ensuring it moves to a more sustainable business model and has the right leadership in place. I was delighted to appoint Julianne Antrobus as CEO in April to lead the organisation into this exciting future, and I know that she is continuing to build a strong team around her to deliver on the Laboratory’s mission.

“Julianne has been successfully embedded as CEO and is well-positioned to lead the organisation forward. Our strategic direction, priorities and commitment to delivering safely and securely for customers remain unchanged. With this solid foundation in place, I have reflected that now is the right time for a new Chair to be appointed to support the next chapter of this amazing organisation.

“I’d like to wish Julianne and her world class team in the Laboratory every success in the future. It is simply the best time to be part of the nuclear sector.”

Julianne Antrobus, CEO of UKNNL, said:

“On behalf of everyone at UKNNL, I want to thank Ian for his dedicated service over the last four years. He has provided strong leadership during a period of significant change and has been instrumental in positioning UKNNL for its next phase of development.

“Ian’s support in my appointment as CEO and his guidance as we have navigated recent challenges has been invaluable. We wish him well for the future.

“UKNNL’s mission, capability and strategic direction remain unchanged. We continue to deliver world-class nuclear science and technology services for our customers and the nation, supported by our talented team and robust Business Plan.”
