Job Description for Engineering Design Manager:

As a leader within the Engineering team, you will be responsible for the overall delivery of Engineering Design scope within the UKNNL Central Laboratory, from scope development/ upfront feasibility through to design support to Commissioning activities and design support to operational plant. This role offers an amazing opportunity to deliver multiple projects from cradle to grave which are of national importance to the UK nuclear industry. You’ll be a key part of a team that delivers work to benefit society by advancing cleaner energy, protecting the environment, and keeping everyone safe.
The location for this role is flexible and can be based at Sellafield or Risley.
Main Responsibilities for Engineering Design Manager:
To Head of Engineering for:
- Ensuring appropriate and adequate design standards and practices are deployed ensuring deliverables are to the appropriate standards and the solutions generated are safe, legal and adequately underpinned in compliance with UKNNL’s Design Process.
- Ensuring the duties of the CDM Principal Designer are adequately discharged.
- Ensuring subject matter experts are appropriately and adequately engaged in a timely manner and LFE captured, disseminated and utilized.
- Ensuring solutions meet agreed performance demands and documents define and preserve the design intent and are organised and align with the plant configuration.
- Ensuring all necessary documentation is generated to meet safety and legal requirements that enable; receipt on a nuclear licensed site, installation, commissioning and taking into service of plant and equipment.
- Providing leadership, support and direction to teams of multi-disciplined Engineers delivering the design work.
- Building strong and trusted relationships with Stakeholders within Engineering and the broader UKNNL.
- Supporting Continuous Improvement activities for improvements within Engineering.
To Project Management for:
- Ensuring work portfolio is delivered and controlled efficiently and effectively to meet agreed specification, cost and schedule.
- Ensuring design solutions are fit for purpose, integrated, affordable and deliver the business case, functional specification and execution plan.
- Ensuring all technical, safety and engineering risks are identified, owned and managed.
- Ensuring status and performance of work in progress is accurate and reported in line with project requirements.
- Ensuring projects have the appropriate SQEP Design resources assigned to project delivery.
Essential Criteria for Engineering Design Manager:
- Qualifications: HNC Engineering.
- Professional Membership: Incorporated Engineer.
- Experience: Significant and demonstrable experience working within a regulated and quality assured system in an Engineering Management role.
- Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).
Desirable Criteria for Engineering Design Manager:
- Qualifications: MEng (Hons).
- Professional Membership: Chartered Engineer (Equivalent experience can be offered in lieu if it is deemed appropriate by the Head of Engineering).
- Experience: Significant and demonstrable experience working within the Nuclear industry (preferably Sellafield) in an Engineering Management role.
