The nuclear industry is currently experiencing substantial growth and investment, prompting UKNNL to enhance their health physics capabilities to address the increasing demand. The “Health Physics Team Leader” will be crucial to the success of delivering a self-sustaining health physics model for UKNNL.
Based on the Sellafield site across our Windscale Facility and Central Laboratory, this role will be responsible for leading and developing teams of health physics monitors crucial for delivering work of strategic national importance. Alongside the day to day management of the team, our Health Physics team leaders will also be a key stakeholder for ensuring site radiological safety and compliance with regulatory standards supporting the sites emergency arrangements.
Main Responsibilities for Health Physics Team Leader:
- Line Management of a team of health physics monitors providing coaching, mentoring and development. Alongside managing performance and progress of the team. Managing team dose requirements and ensuring the team is capable and available to deliver the facility delivery plan.
- Act as Health Physics and re-entry controller for defined areas.
- Subject matter expert with accountability for decision making and provision of initial radiological and environmental advice.
- Provide health physics monitors to operations, maintenance and contractor teams with the appropriate skills, training, and appointed roles, to carry out tasks and responsibilities safely, efficiently, effectively adhering to all statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Deliver and ensure the routine radiological monitoring schedule is met and the information reported, taking immediate action where required to ensure safety of site personnel.
- Ensure radiological monitoring to release items from Controlled Areas is done in line with Site arrangements.
- Investigate accidents and incidents to enable effective response to injured personnel or damaged plant whilst maintaining nuclear and radiological safety.
- Liaise with appropriate stakeholders such as RPA / delivery manager/ OCM to facilitate delivery of the facility plan.
Essential Criteria for Health Physics Team Leader:
- Specialist knowledge of health physics monitoring (NVQ 3 radiation protection, City and Guilds radiation safety practice stages 1&2, ANIA Award in nuclear industry awareness level 2).
- Significant experience of working in health physics roles e.g. Monitor, Assessor, Team Leader Support.
- Knowledge of the IRR’s (Ionising radiation regulations).
- Detailed knowledge of site policy and procedures related to health and safety.
- Detailed knowledge in the full range of measurement techniques required to assess levels of radiation, contamination and environmental discharge.
- Ability to obtain DV level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial, criminal record checks, interview plus 10 years of UK residency).
Desirable Criteria for Health Physics Team Leader:
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.
- IOSH Managing safely.
- Formal leadership qualification or experience of managing teams.
- Previous Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) experience and appointment.
